Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Loft Conversion Right for Your Home?

A loft conversion is a fantastic way to unlock the hidden potential of your home, creating valuable additional living space while potentially increasing your property's value. Whether you're dreaming of an extra bedroom, a luxurious master suite or a dedicated home office, converting your loft could be the perfect solution.  However, every home is different, and it's important to understand what's possible before getting started.

We've answered some of the most frequently asked questions to help you decide whether a loft conversion is right for you. If you need further advice, our experienced team is always happy to help you explore the possibilities.

                                                      Can I Convert My Loft?

Most homes have the potential for a loft conversion, but a few key factors will determine what's possible:

  • Headroom: Ideally, your loft should have at least 2.2 metres of height, although solutions may be available for lower roofs.

  • Ownership: You must have the necessary rights and permissions to convert your loft space.

  • Planning: Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas may require additional consent.

  • Staircase: Sufficient space is needed for a safe, permanent staircase.

What Will My Loft Conversion Cost?

The cost of your loft conversion will depend on the size of your property, the type of conversion and your chosen finishes. A simple Velux rooflight conversion is generally the most affordable option, while dormer and larger roof extensions provide additional space at a higher cost.

Do I Have To Vacate My Home During a Loft Conversion?

No! Most homeowners can comfortably remain in their property throughout the conversion.

Our team will carry out much of the work through external scaffolding, keeping disruption inside your home to a minimum. Some internal work will be necessary, particularly when installing your new staircase, and there may be brief interruptions to water or electricity supplies.

At Loft 7, we take every care to minimise disruption, keep your home tidy and ensure your daily routine continues as smoothly as possible.

Do I Need Planning Permission And Who Draws Up the Plans?

Our dedicated and experienced design team will prepare all the plans for your loft conversion, saving you time and money. We're also happy to work with plans you've already obtained.  Many loft conversions fall under permitted development rights and don't require planning permission. However, restrictions may apply depending on your property and proposed design. Our team will assess your requirements, advise on permissions and handle all necessary applications for you.
